Today in the Flowerparade a thistle, you'd think.
Yet this Candle Bol does not belong to the Thistles, but to the family of the Callicarpa.
This tall, slender plant brings you long-lasting pleasure:
First there is the slender plant, with large leaves, and there at the top of the stems grow the thistle-like bulbs, filled with purple flowers.
Lots of very little flowers, I always like them to see.
After flowering there will be seeds in all holes, which are nutritious for the birds in your garden.
Candle balls are perfect for drying: in your garden or indoors.
Often the bulbs are sprayed, and around Christmas they are used as decoration in Christmas decorations.
Or you leave them in your garden, and they are a welcome home for various insects. A natural insect hotel.
Candle bulbs bloom in summer, June to August.
They like to stand on sandy soil, and also occur in the wild.
In earlier times, the bulbs were also used for roughing blankets.
