Each body cell contains 46 chromosomes and they always occur in pairs.
Except in the germ cells: they have only one part of each chromosome.
So they don't have 46 but 23 chromosomes.
After fertilization, when the ovum and sperm merge, a new cell will be created that has 2 parts of each chromosome.
