#verpleeg - or nursing home

Do one of your parents have to go to a nursing home soon? Or maybe both of your parents? That can be pretty emotional. And in practical terms, there is also a lot to be arranged. Here are some tips to make this change a little easier for you and your parents.

1. Request a WIZ indication

A nursing home is for people who can no longer live at home due to old age or illness. A nursing home is for people with severe or physical disabilities who need treatment. People can only live in a nursing home if they have a so-called WIZ 'indication for residence'. This indication can be used by your parents applications through the CIZ (Central Indication Body Care), but you can also do this or the general practitioner.

2. Start searching for a healthcare facility on time

Start looking for a suitable nursing or nursing home. Finding a suitable location that also has space is difficult. So you guys looking for something close to your house or work? Or near other relatives? Look on www.kiesbeter.nl for an overview of nursing homes. Or, for example, visit institutions nearby. If your father or mother has an WIZ indication, they can also be placed on the waiting list of a specific healthcare facility.

3. Calculate your own contribution quickly

People living in a healthcare institution pay their own contribution to the CAK. This is covered by the Long-term Care Act. Your father or mother will receive a monthly invoice from the CAK. The own contribution in 2020 is at least €0 per month and maximum €2,419,40 per month. The first four months someone pays a low own contribution and then usually the high own. You can easily calculate the contribution via: https://www.hetcak.nl/zelf-regelen/eigen-bijdrage-rekenhulp

Label Clothing and Linens

People living in a nursing home or nursing home can use the institution's linen. But if people want to, they can also use their own towels, washcloths, kitchen textiles and bed linen. Since all laundry is processed centrally, when using your own linen, it is useful to label these items clearly with clothing labels. Also, many institutions advise to mark items of clothing with name labels, so that nothing gets lost in the laundry. (Or forgotten in the common areas after a fun activity.) You can label the clothes and bed linen in different ways. The infographic of Top Labels contains tips on the different ways to apply a name label.

5. Control phone, TV and internet

Provide TV, phone and internet in the new place of residence. The facilities vary by institution. If someone has their own room, there are usually connections for television and telephone. The bill is for the resident's expenses. Inform if the healthcare facility offers wifi. Often this is not the case. So that means you might have to arrange this for your parents if they or you do need it. A good, secure internet connection is nice if you want to Skype with parents or if your parents want to online banking, for example. Check with the institution about the use of the Internet.

Of course, you want your parents to be able to live independently for a long time and in good health. And nowadays, older people continue to live at home for longer, because it is always first looked at whether home care is possible. But should your parents eventually go to a nursing home or a nursing home, make sure you are well prepared with the above tips.
