He is the god of thunder and the lord of heaven. He reigned from his throne on the sacred mount of Olympus with the other gods, demigods and humans. It used to be symbolized with a lightning bolt, a scepter or an eagle.
He represented for many the god justice and clemency who punished those who presided over evil wanderings with his lightning.
He had many children with human women and goddesses, and was known for his encounters with Gaménides. He married Hera, with whom he had eight children.
The Greeks used to worship him through colossal sculptures, among them the work of Phidias, who built a sculpture 13 meters high and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
