Zucchini and pumpkin flowers
#edibleflowers Zucchini flower
Both male and female flowers of zucchini can be eaten, but it is advisable to collect the male ones and leave the female ones in the bush for the zucchini to grow, since their flowering is monoecious and the reproduction is alogamous. This means that it requires cross-pollination and that each plant is capable of producing male and female flowers, thus ensuring their reproduction. Male flowers tend to have a larger size and a more elongated shape, and are attached to the plant by a long stem, since they will not develop the fruit, having pistils inside them. The feminine ones are kept attached to the plant through the zucchini that gradually grows at the base of its pistil, where the ovary houses the ovules.
They have a deep yellow color, with a sweet taste and a soft texture. They are used fried, stuffed and to make quesadillas and soups in Mexican gastronomy. As well as zucchini and auyama or pumpkin tarts in other countries.
