Electronic dance music, screaming guitars boybands and cheeky girl groups: there was something for everyone in the 90s. 90’s music was on the one hand a continuation of music from previous decades, but there are also a few worldwide trends coming out the speakers.
The 90's music
Solo, girl bands, boy bands, pairs. The nineties was very versatile and there was something for everyone. The 90's was an unforgettable musical year. And the music tracks are still immensely popular.
The most popular artists of the 90s where the backstreet boys, Robbie Williams, Spice Girls, 2 unlimited, Bon Jovi and the party animals.
Of course there were many more good musicians, but these where the big earners from the 90's. Below you will find more information.
The backstreet boys. A boy band consisting of Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean, Howie Dorough and Kevin Richardson. The boys who used to break many women hearts with their songs and charms. You heard their songs everywhere and you started to sing along automatically. They sang about situations from real life, recognizable for everyone.
As they grew older, the group grew apart. A few went solo, but never got the popularity that they had with the band. Meanwhile, the boy band is back together again and they are on a world tour with songs from the 90's and songs from now
Robbie Williams became popular in the 90's with the boy band Take That, but broke through as a solo artist from 1996 onwards. The best choice he could ever make in his career, because after that he became one of the bigger ones.
Robbie Williams did not always make the right choices in his life. For example, he has been admitted several times in rehab clinics due to excessive drug and drink use.
A similar band as the Backstreet Boys, but a girls version. They sang emotional songs about mothers, but also about friendship. The spice girls was a group of young girls who were incredibly successful and walked the top lists several times.
Besides their musical career, the spice girls also got their own movie "Spice girls the movie" Especially young girls did their best to imitate the girl group. Young girls sang along loudly with the music, and wear very high platform shoes, just like the spice girls.
The Spice girls: Victoria Adams (Posh), Emma Bunton (Baby), Melanie Chrisholm (Sporty), Melanie Brown (Scary), Geri Halliwel (Ginger) started out as a marketing stunt, but later became the most popular girl band ever. Geri Halliwel left the band to start a solo career, but the other four girls stayed in the same formation. Later Halliwel came back to go on tour.
2 Unlimited is, according to sales figures, the most successful Dutch-Belgian pop band in history. During the first half of the 90s, the Belgian producers Jean-Paul De Coster and Phil Wilde won various world hits with the Dutch Anita Doth and Ray Slijngaard. In total they sold more than 20 million records worldwide. Later the band would make a new start with other singers.
2 Unlimited was the first group to make house music on a real large scale an international commercial success. The formula of a male rapper and a singer, with easy melodies in the ear and sturdy dance rhythms (also called eurodance), dominated pop music in the 90s.
The Party Animals is a Dutch house band that scored some big hits in the second half of the 90s. In the 90s the Party Animals mainly produced happy hardcore, later moved to hardcore house.
The first acquaintance with the Party Animals was in the video clip of the Flamman & Abraxas remix of I wanna be a hippy by Technohead. Three gabbers and a hippy were shown in the video clip. The Dutch producers (Jeroen Flamman and Jeff 'Abraxas' Porter), who were behind the remix, discovered the four and soon after the hit the Party Animals continued as their own group.
Their first single Have you ever been mellow sung by Suzanna Mangar, immediately became a number 1 hit. Their second (Hava Naquila, gold) and third (Aquarius, platinum) single also reached the number 1 position in the Netherlands. The Party Animals also conquered other countries, for example with Atomic they scored a big hit in Hong Kong.
At the end of the 90s, the Party Animals scored a few more big hits with My Way and Hawaii 5-0.
NSync the next boy band from the nineties, but certainly not one of the least. The boy band with Justin Timberlake, Lance Bass, JC Chazes, Joey Fatone and Chris KirkPatrick sold more than 70 million records. And is one of the more successful boybands from the 90's.
Justin Timberlake started a solo career and got out of the group first. After that the group continued to make music, but after a long break they completely stopped making music in the formation of NSync.
Bon Jovi already known well before the 90's, but scored a world hit with his song "Always" a non-typical rock song, as the band normally released. But more of a love song with a rock undertone. Bon Jovi is still a good scoring artist to this day, with a big crowd of fans.
I have previously written an extensive post about the life of Jon Bon Jovi and the origin of the band. (This is in Dutch) Below the link:
