This story is not about me, but about the woman in the cover photo. No, that's not me, we look alike.
This is my sister Desirée's story. I have multiple siblings but she is first over me. Nevertheless, she is almost 6 years older. That gives me some time to follow in her footsteps.
Desirée asked me if I knew a way to share her story. Well, here I am.
History
We come from a family where there are quite a lot of heart and vascular problems. For example, our mother, who was already a heart patient, died of cardiac arrest a few years ago. Our father has also been helped to the heart. Also in third degree family ties, there are deaths due to heart or vascular problems.With us in the family, overweight also occurs. We love good food and we just really have a predisposition to it. It also bothers me, but it remains within limits with me. At Desirée, however, those beds were no longer to be found
Tipping Point
Until the end of July 2021. Everyone is in lockdown and everyone will arrive a few pounds. Desirée then reaches its low point, or maybe its peak. Desirée doesn't have a few kilos too much at that time, but a few tens of pounds too much. When she has a panic attack, she thought, not entirely surprising, that she had something with her heart. This was a moment for her when she really woke up. She wants to start losing weight and was told she is in early stages of type 2 diabetes. So now she has to lose weight too, because then she can still turn this around.Her fight against the pounds has begun and at that time she weighs 1406kg at a length of 162m
Just do
She does everything mainly on her own. She omits bad habits, such as drinking coke. For someone like me with a big weakness for coke, I know how difficult that is. She eats several smaller portions in a day and starts exercising intensively. Okay, that sports started mainly with daily walking. She had a lot to go along and so had to start somewhere. She is enthusiastic and full of good courage and is on the move every day. And, I didn't say this to her before, I had little faith at first that she would last. I was hoping so because I don't want to lose her weight, but didn't expect it. So, of course, I am now very proud that she is still doing so well 9 months later.Present
So, we are 9 months later. Her walking routines have given way to strength training and running. For example, last week she did a sponsor run for Kika where she covered 5km in 33 minutes and 30 seconds.It is an extra achievement when you consider that they are now only 761kg. That means 645kg is gone. But those pounds were in her skin. And that skin, that's still there. And it's mostly in the way.
Operations
She had a conversation last week about surgery to get rid of excess skin, unfortunately they couldn't do it where she had the conversation, but she's still having conversation in different location soon.But finding someone who can do the surgery, and schedule it is one thing. The other thing is, the insurance doesn't want to reimburse it. At first, they didn't want to reimburse it because her BMI was not low enough at that time. It was 301 at the time of applications and had to be under 29. Personally, I wonder if BMI is a good indication for it, because all that skin certainly weighs some. Meanwhile, her BMI is 286. Desirée happy, insurer not. Who now says that the skin should hang 30 centimeters on the upper legs first. Like it doesn't bother her right now. Think of physical inconveniences such as blemishes, but also mental inconveniences. Have you done such a feat, you can't be completely satisfied with yourself yet.
Support
Now she has dear friends who have started a go fund with action. There's already a lot of fun collected. But the goal set there is only half the expected costs. And the chances of the costs getting bigger are more plausible than they are getting smaller.It's a few setbacks she has in her trajectory, but she won't let herself get out of the way. When my little son went video calling her yesterday morning, without my permission, she was also working in the gym, together with her daughter. She's going for it anyway and that surgery comes in anyway. She receives a lot of love, help and support. It would only have been more fun if the insurer was also part of that.
