I have always enjoyed analyzing advertisements, which are the faithful mirror of society and of the present moment. Soon it will be Christmas, this Christmas out of the ordinary, the first so strange at least since the end of the Second World War, and I wonder how advertisers are dealing with it. Like us, just like us: waiting, pending. I saw an advertisement asking viewers to talk about how they will live upcoming holidays. Because never like now will Christmas be a private matter, different from that of others.
Christmas is based on tradition, on conformity, on consumerism. But this year everyone will have to interpret it in his own way. Someone will have to deal with the disease, someone with forced isolation, someone with lack of money. Someone, hopefully few, will not care and celebrate as always, with a debauched and decadent saraband, with a baroque skull spirit that shines through under the smile.
Someone will remain alone, someone will have to reorganize around a primitive nucleus of feelings and traditions. I hope to be part of the last category, I hope to be able to carve out a core of memories, folklore, familiar and handed down gestures. Or invent new ones, who knows.
