Barnacle geese hibernate mainly in areas around the North Sea, while they breed in the far north.

They do this because the light is longer there in the summer and the night predators, such as the (pole) fox, then pose less danger to steal their eggs or chicks.

Since the mid-1980s, however, they remain increasingly in the low countries, such as the Netherlands and Belgium, to breed. They live close to water and pasture, because they mainly eat grass.

If you want to keep barnacle geese, you can only keep animals bred in captivity. Wild barnacle geese should not be caught.
