Better for the environment and the wallet, but not for the economy
Better for the environment and the wallet, but not for the economy.
I myself buy as little new as possible, because I think this is a waste of my money. Why buy new, when 2nd hands are equally good and much cheaper? Still, my recycling and 2nd hand behaviour is a downside. It's bad for the economy. Where in the past few people bought 2nd hands, we now do it massively. 2nd hands is hip! Recycling is good for the environment and the planet.
Where previously only artistic people and hippies used to do upcycling, now many people do it.
Upcycling is making your 2nd hand gear hip. Think of a locker that you found for free, sand it up and then paint it in a trendy color. Or think of old books from which you make a locker or a basketball that turns you into a planter. Upcycling is totally hip! Especially among young people who want to earn an extra pocket money via Marketplace or via Facebook.
What is upcycling?
Personally I'm not that into upcycling, unfortunately I don't have enough time for that myself. I'm always afraid I'll leave it and not use it, which is a sin.
I buy a lot at 2nd hand stores, when I look in my own room only 1 closet is new. And it's from the Ikea because I couldn't find a bookcase suitable for our board games. The rest of my furniture comes from the circuit or 2nd hand via Facebook. My last addition is our corner sofa of less than 2 years old, which I could take over for €50 from someone who had to get rid of it quickly. It was a hassle with organizing a trailer with friends, but we are super happy with it! Our old bank fell apart, literally. Still, I have recycled some of that. The sofa had large cushions and I kept them in the barn for the summer. I want to use this to make a nice lounge corner. With a lot of creativity, you can get very far. For example, I want to make a new cover for the pillows with old curtain fabric. This cost me nothing, just a little labor.
