Tree tour Mheenpark, Apeldoorn
The Mheenpark is the first park in Apeldoorn where visitors can learn about trees via a tree route.
IVN nature guides have set up the route that leads past 27 different tree species.
The 22 ha park is an important part of the ecological green structure of Apeldoorn. This is a route along which plants and animals can establish themselves and move through the city. The management of the park is aimed at promoting the natural values as much as possible. Wild flowers are given a chance in the grass in places that are only mowed once or twice a year. The planting is largely indigenous and herbs grow abundantly.
I begin my walk through the park at the Beech Hedge.

Two old beech hedges stand in front of the de Groenhoeve farm. These hedges predate the construction of the Mheenpark in 1975.
Next we see the Silver Lime.

The whitish-purple underside of the leaf makes it look silvery, hence the name.
We move on to the Caucasian Wingnut.

This fast-growing tree, native to the Caucasus, was brought to Europe in the eighteenth century. Beneath the shiny green leaves, which are sometimes composed of 41 narrow leaves, the male and female catkins dangle first. In the fall, the strings of winged nuts sometimes as long as 50 centimeters appear.
