On December 7 in Colombia we start Christmas, with the day of the candles, we illuminate the streets with the light of joy, millions of candles are lit in the country to celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, commemorates the moment when the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she was chosen, from before of her birth, to be the mother of Jesus.

Colombia, a country where the Catholic religion predominates, this tradition is a place where they reunite with their families and friends, taking advantage of the fact that the following day is a holiday.

History tells us that this date was proclaimed by Pope Pius IX in the Bull “known as a papal document Ineffabilis Deus”, on December 8, 1854, it is said that on the day on which this date was chosen, believers from various parts of the world lit candles to celebrate the moment and since then, the tradition of light up this december night in some countries.

This date is also taken advantage of by trade, there are places in the country that attract hundreds of tourists to this party, we see special events and shows, in towns such as Villa de Leyva, Medellin, Corrales and Quimbaya, which on Las Velitas Day and that is why they have become obligatory destinations for this time of year.
