De Blankaart, a nature paradise in Diksmuide.
Located in the heart of the West-Flemish polders, De Blankaart offers a unique and enchanting nature experience. This beautiful nature reserve, which covers an area of 150 hectares, is one of Diksmuide's hidden gems. The domain consists of a mix of wetlands, ponds, reed beds and meadows, making it an ideal habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna.
One of the most impressive residents of De Blankaart is the majestic sea eagle. This impressive bird of prey, with a wingspan of up to 25 meters, has settled in the area in recent years and is attracting the attention of bird lovers and wildlife photographers alike. The presence of the sea eagle is a sign of the good health of the ecosystem in De Blankaart. Known for their hunting skills, these birds feed mainly on fish, which they regularly find in the reserve's ponds.
I was able to catch a glimpse of it last Monday, when one of the sea eagles circled over my head. They had their breeding ground on an island. Fortunately, far enough away from walkers and curious photographers. Now the young are there and they fly out regularly.
