Dilemma is a situation or problem in which two equally unattractive (or attractive) alternatives must be chosen. The choice can therefore not only be made on logical grounds.

In the Coalition agreement 2021 — 2025 Looking forward to each other, looking forward to the future of VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie 15 December 2021 states:

Nuclear energy can complement the sun, wind and geothermal energy in the energy mix and can be used for the production of hydrogen. It also makes us less dependent on the import of gas. That is why the Borssele nuclear power plant remains open longer, with an eye for safety, of course. Nuclear energy has been a sensitive subject in the Netherlands for years. At one time, nuclear energy was seen as the way to produce energy in the future, but throughout history, doubts and even scandals also arose about, for example, the safety and costs of nuclear energy.

In 1930, the Faculty of Physics of the VU University (VU) started in Amsterdam under the direction of Professor G. Y. Sizoo with natural radioactivity research. In 1932, the neutron was discovered, after which nuclear physics blossomed. In the late 1930s, scientists around the world became obsessed with uranium fission. After it became clear that nuclear fission released a lot of energy that could be used usefully with a so-called 'uranium-machine', the Dutch government bought 10,000 kilos of uranium oxide in the Belgian Congo in the summer of 1939.
