KNRM Noordwijk aan Zee, Best beach guests,
For many years, we have been warning all beach goers from the KNRM about the dangers of the sea. Unfortunately, very sad reports appear regularly in the media showing that we cannot keep warning often enough. Parts of this message are appreciated, because it can potentially save human lives.

The danger of a mui;
A great danger of the beach in combination with the sea are the muien. A mui is a deeper section across the coastline between two sandbanks. The water between the beach and the sandbanks (swwin) flows when water rises (from low tide to high tide, then the tide becomes) and dropping water (from high to low water, then the ebb) towards these deeper parts. This creates a powerful current towards the sea. For swimmers a very dangerous situation because swimming against this stream is an uninitiated thing. In this situation, it is better to be carried by the current. The current will become weaker after which you can swim back to the coast with a large arc around the mui. You will understand that such a situation for young children can often go wrong very quickly. Therefore, take care of each other.

The danger of east wind;
In the east wind, objects are blown towards the sea by the wind. Floating agents such as an inflatable ball, crocodile or air mattress will then become very dangerous. Often people don't know how fast they drift on a float and once this is the case, swimming back turns out to be no longer an option. Also the chasing of floating floats often leads to dangerous situations.

Tip to all parents:
Keep young children in the water at an arm's length, even if they wear swimming bands. Those straps are a tool, not a lifeline. In the sea you step into a pit, causing your child to go down. You need to be able to react quickly.
