De Gruyter was a retail chain in the Netherlands, in the 19th and 20th centuries (until 1976). At the peak there were more than 550 stores and almost 7,500 employees.
As a customer binder, De Gruyter gave away a small gift for children every week from 1948: the legendary Sweetje of the week. It was introduced when after World War II the sugar went off the voucher and there was too much sugar on offer. Some guilders of groceries were given unsolicited sweets for the children. Later the βcandyβ became a plastic toy, a game, a doll or a booklet. Every week something different. A lengthy action was that of cardboard sheets of houses and buildings.
