A hostname is a machine name on the Internet. In order to reach that machine, a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) must be used. That means adding your domain name to the hostname. A good example of this is www. That's an HTTP server. To reach a website's www server, tap: www. (name).(extension). And then you will end up on the requested website.

IP address host name

To find out the IP address of a hostname, you need the nslookup program. This program can be obtained separately as well as online.

My computer hostname

When you connect to the Internet with your computer, your Internet access provider assigns you an IP address. That IP address, which is a combination of 11 digits and points, is also associated with a hostname. Assigning a hostname is necessary because some Internet servers want to know a hostname first before they want to provide certain services. For example, a telenet server will look up your hostname before you get connected. The hostname also usually indicates which city you are in and which modem (or ISDN adapter) you are using.
