I am really the product of emigrants, which may well be the entire population of the Caribbean. But here's my story...
Mom was born in Aruba, and raised in Suriname. Her father, Chinese, from an emigrated Chinese family who emigrated from China to Suriname in the early 19th century. My grandfather was born and raised Surinamer. My grandmother was half Portuguese and half Dutch. Her ancestors by family scandal, rich Portuguese daughter who had a child out of marriage with a dark man, also emigrated to Suriname at the beginning of the 19th century. My grandmother's ancestors had a coffee and sugar plantation in Cottica, on the Cotticarivier east of Suriname. Let's go back to my grandparents, who met in Suriname. My grandmother, who was still married to another, fell like a block for my Chinese grandfather and my mother was their love child. Right after that, she got divorced and remarried to my grandfather.
My father also has a beautiful and dramatic family story. The ancestors of Spong family also emigrated to Suriname by a family scandal around 1827. We are still descendants of Princess Henriette Maria (1609, daughter of Henry IV, King of France) 👸 always knew I was a princess hihihihi. In the program hidden past our Spong family tree was checked when Gerard was a guest, he and my father are full cousins and share the same grandparents, Francois André Spong (1873, Paramaribo) ∞ Egbertina Hemp (1878, Paramaribo) Enfin back with my grandfather. His mother was of Indonesian origin, born and raised in Suriname.
My father's grandmother was also European, German and Dutch. Her ancestors also emigrated to Suriname in the early 19th century and found in the family tree that they also had a sugar plantation in Suriname, the Three Brothers on the Suriname River. My father's parents migrated to Curaçao where my father was born. My grandfather helped set up the television infrastructure in Curaçao, and repaired TVs for years afterwards and was a well-known name on the island.
Both my father and my mother went back to Suriname with their parents and sisters around the sixties, where they met. I myself was born there, but I grew up in Curaçao. Where I lived until I was 21. Because of follow-up studies, I emigrated to the Netherlands in 1995 and lived there for 21 years. The tradition continues, we are back on Curaçao since 2016. The kids will continue the “pull”. Children born in Brabant who will return to the Netherlands in 5/6 years to study.
