Farmers see no benefit in a mandatory, annual inspection of the fire safety of their stables. The control should significantly reduce the number of stable fires. Every year, hundreds of thousands of animals die in fires that are usually caused by a short circuit. More than 130,000 animals died in stable fires in 2022. This year, animal rights organizations already had 28,000 victims. Last week, 3,000 pigs died in Reusel in a stable fire. And at the beginning of April, 9,000 pigs died in Sint-Oedenrode when a stable went up in flames, writes the AD. Since 2014, just under 400 stable fires have killed more than 11 million animals, according to figures from the Association of Insurers. But the farmers and their organizations do not want an annual inspection. Too much hassle.
