#running I was watching TV when I saw a scene from a movie where Forrest Gump stands up on the porch of his house, starts running and traversing the United States. He inspired many people and in real life generated a legion of followers of the character. We have seen runners dressed as the character in races on many occasions.
Some even mimic the performance of Forrest Gump. A British athlete, Rob Pope, ran 24,600 kilometers and crossed the United States four times for 422 days, albeit in several separate stages over a two-year period. During his tour of the places where the character traveled in the film, he wore an outfit similar to that of Forrest Gump and grew his beard and hair.
In 2013, a reporter from The Week calculated the figures for Forrest Gump's great run on the film. The character was 35 years old when he started running through the United States. According to the reporter, she ran a total of 30,000 kilometers, starting in Alabama and ending in Monument Valley, for 1169 days, with an average of 25 kilometers per day.
It's curious that so many runners around the world have identified themselves in this way over the years with a scene in a movie that's not really about running or athletics. And many of them found their inspiration to race exactly in that movie.
As well as the legendary Forrest GUMP scene. Nowadays, when someone sees us running and is not very familiar with the sport, they encourage us with a “come on, Forrest.” Sometimes he does it in a mocking tone or with a slight contempt. But we all know he's the fool. Forrest Gump taught us.
