History of Bonsai
Most people assume that Bonsai originated in Japan. wrong.
Even 200 years before there was talk of this art form in Japan, the Chinese were already miniaturizing potted trees.
In China, people knew the “punt sai” (scale planting), or miniature landscapes created on a shallow scale. Later, the term “pun ching” or “Penging” (scale landscape) comes into effect.
It wasn't until around 1800 that Japanese experts in the 'tree shaping' art came together to identify the different shapes. The name Bonsai (tree in pot) was coined, which is in fact the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese “pen sai”.
If in China the Penjing was mainly a hobby for the elite, Bonsai in Japan was appreciated, practiced and commercialized by almost everyone.
