How does your body process drinking alcohol?
The holidays are over.
For many days of alcohol and plentiful eating.
When you drink alcohol, it goes through different phases in your body. It is mainly metabolized in the liver, but it also affects other organs and processes. Below, I explain step by step what happens.
1. Absorption into the body
After drinking alcohol (ethanol), it is rapidly absorbed into your blood via the mucous membranes of your mouth, stomach, and small intestine.
- In the stomach: A small amount of alcohol is absorbed immediately. The emptier your stomach, the faster this happens.
- In the small intestine: This is where the largest recording takes place. Alcohol enters your bloodstream through the small intestine, causing it to spread rapidly throughout your body, including the brain.
2. Liver processing
The liver plays a crucial role in the breakdown of alcohol. Around 90% of the alcohol is broken down here, while the rest is excreted through sweat, urine and respiration.
