According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, the U.S. insurance industry's net premiums in 2020 reached $1.28 trillion, with property and casualty (P & C) insurers recording 51% of those premiums and life and annuity insurers recording 49%.

Auto, house, and business insurance make up most of P/C insurance. In 2020, the sector's net premiums earned reached $652.8 billion. In 2020, the sector's net premiums came to $624.0 billion. Annuities, accident and health insurance, and life insurance are all included in the life/annuity insurance market.

Although businesses specializing in health insurance write most private health insurance, life/annuity and property/casualty insurers also sell coverage known as accident and health insurance. According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, the total amount of private health insurance direct premiums issued in 2020 was $1.1 trillion, made up of $834.4 billion from the health insurance sector, and $209.8 billion from the life/annuity segment, and $6.4 billion from P&C annual statements. Government initiatives are also a part of the health insurance business.

In 2020, life insurance and annuities totaled $4.7 trillion, while assets from separate accounts and other investments came to $3 trillion. Both industries combined had $9.7 trillion worth of cash and investment assets. Most of these assets were bondsβ€”55 percent of P/C assets and 70% of life/annuity assets, excluding separate accounts.
