Last summer I was able to follow very closely how wasps build their nest. We stayed in a beautiful holiday home, with a wooden terrace overlooking a valley and on which wooden furniture stood. We spent hours enjoying the view, the tranquility, the sun that disappeared behind the mountains and good books.

Notice the weathered wood of the terrace. That's what wasps use to make their egg chambers. They bite off pieces of wood and mix it with saliva. That's the raw material for their structure. They're building egg rooms. In this, the queen drops her eggs.

In our case, they did this in the protrusion of the rail of the awning. Just take a look at the video. (Not too best quality, I did not dare to approach very close and it is filmed with a camera...)

At first it looks pretty harmless, but such a wasp's nest can expand to about 5,000 wasps if you let them do their thing!
