Sambuci flos, The flowers (fencing) of Sambucus nigra L. picked during the beginning of the flowering period, without the stems.
Harvest: May, June. Gently picking without bruising to prevent brown discolouration
Drying: As soon as possible at temperature up to a maximum of 30 °C.
Store: Dry and out of light (maximum 3 years, preferably not older than 1 year).
Description: Yellowish, white flowers average 4 mm wide, short triangular sepals, egg round petals, semi-sustaining fruiting principle with a short style and three nodule shaped stamps.
The best commodity contains mostly flower crowns and stamens, few or no stem parts.
Smell: typically pleasant aromatic.
Taste: weakly slimy sweet, then slightly bitter (especially the stem parts).
Sambuci fructus recens, The fresh, well-ripe berries processed into juice or syrup (Sambuci sirupus).
Description: The fruit is a shiny, round and black-violet coloured stone fruit of ± 6 mm diameter.

Hier in Roemenië staat veel vlier in het wild en in tuinen. Bij je huis schijnt het de muggen weg te houden. Van de bloesem wordt limonade en siroop gemaakt. Gefrituurde vlierbloesem wordt ook gegeten en is heel lekker. De bessen worden hier wat minder vaak gebruikt omdat velen denken dat die giftig zijn.
