It is not going to be possible to stop global warming. That grim forecast is made by 24 Dutch scientists who all co-wrote the IPCC climate report. The NOS reports this. The Paris Climate Agreement agreed to keep global warming below 2 degrees, a temperature that is already far too high for many areas of the planet. That goal is unattainable, say the scientists now. The limit of 2 degrees — and preferably 1.5 — is not just chosen: an increase by more than that, catapults the Earth into an irreversible climate crisis with melting ice sheets, rising sea levels, drought, famine and mass extinction of all kinds of life forms as a result. So the helm had to change urgently, but the ambitions are not high enough, the pace at which countries take action is far too low.

By now, the Earth is already 1.1 degrees warmer. A think tank that calculates countries' climate plans expects the Earth to be 2.7 degrees warmer by 2100, based on current policies. “It is very clear that we are on a plus 3 degree path,” says Gert-Jan Nabuurs, IPCC lead author and climate scientist at Wageningen University. “Above land, it is already 2.5 degrees warmer. So we can actually forget about the 1.5 degrees”.
