“Beautiful was that time”

The last minutes are ticking away, the tension rises and there is a disappointed atmosphere in the air.
The end of the game against Feyenoord is approaching, but all of a sudden there's cheers, screams,
singing and I leave with great relief a sigh coming from my toes.

The Kuip is upside down and Sjakie on his marvelous slippers is widely revered.
He scores two crucial goals and that in the last few minutes, well that's really not wrong.
The final score is two against one, we won and singing we go
again towards Groningen, our beautiful city.
What a wonderful striker we had on Martin Drent.
The best leader in the Eredivisie, man of the people and naughty as Pietje Bel.
This popular headstrong player was unprecedented fast because of his long legs.
He had humor and his growls and broad grin were discussed quite a lot.
He was separate, particularly loved, sensitive and also regularly
Dived a little too deep into the glass.
He is living proof that a very good blood flow can heal even a hamstring.
Our Groningen Pietje Bel is simply a epicurean and his name is still widely praised.

As a child, he played football in the youth of GVAV,
the colors green/white and the Oosterpark ended up full of love in his heart.
He even calls it sacred ground and, as in his dreams, his career here brought a particularly beautiful start.

He scored as an amateur at a very young age goal after goal
and of course FC Groningen had not escaped that.
A conversation followed and Martin, the head specialist, got a job.
The season of `91-`92 came exactly as in his dream, but unfortunately went back as quickly.
Yet Martin remained on his feet in his own stubborn way.
He played with Veendam and Emmen, but in the season of `98-`99 he returned.
He scored 22 goals in his first season and showed angry tongues his shiny back.

Groningen was promoted to the Eredivisie and Sjakie with his wonderslippers became a cult hero
and even today his name is fortunately still widely praised.
By the way, I want to share something with you, because I haven't mentioned it yet.
This pure-bred Groninger, born on the Korreweg,
used to walk between the people on the Zaagmuldersweg towards the Oosterpark.
In the middle of that neighborhood, his green/white heart was born and I'm sure he's never lost it before.

Beautiful was that time and that's how it can be again.
Martin now dreams of training in paid football and I love seeing him along the line.
Dear Martin, your wild hair has now passed away, they have made you who you are.
For me, you stay the head of the North and well, actually, yes, actually, you're just a really nice guy.
Keep your grin up, stay proud and smile ear to ear.
In you lies a master class trainer, so don't give up and go for it!
