Sinéad O'Connor her full name Sinéad Marie Bernadette O'Connorborn on 8 December 1966

O'Connor grew up in Glenageary, a suburb of Dublin, as a middle of five children. She was eight years old when her parents divorced after a difficult marriage and the family was split in two. O'Connor initially stayed with her mother, but after four years she moved in with her remarried father.

At the age of 15, O'Connor was placed at a rigorous disciplinary school where she developed her musical qualities. She then recorded a demo (Take My Hand) with the formation In Tua Nua but was found too young to be their singer.

A year later O'Connor went to a boarding school in Waterford where the rules were a lot smoother; with the help of the Irish teacher she recorded her first demo consisting of two covers and two own songs that later appeared on her debut album.

Through an advertisement she had placed in the music magazine Hot Press, O'Connor introduced Columb Farrelly in 1984. Together they founded the band Ton Ton Macoute and moved to Dublin; O'Connor quit school to focus on her singing career.

Ton Ton Macoute relied on themes such as witchcraft, mysticism and world music; the name was taken from the zombies from Haitian myths. Although O'Connor was seen as the centre of the band, she left after her mother died in a car accident on February 10, 1985.

O'Connor has been married four times, and she has four children.
