My spicy life began in the famous 60s of the last century with the reading of Mellie Uyldert's book “The Language of Herbs”. The discovery that 'ordinary' plants such as dandelion, nettle and plantain were good for something appealed to me so much that I went deeper into it and even made it my profession. I am now, 55 years later, about 1,000 herbal books richer, teach herbal medicine and call myself herbalist.
Meanwhile, this' phytotherapy 'has become known and recognized not only in folk medicine but also in official science. the name' herbalist 'has gained some allure again and these' weeds' herbs are also being thoroughly researched scientifically.
Here is an example of how a popular plant such as the peasant flower can grow into the decent medicine Taraxacum and become a symbol of an association.
Who does not know her, the dandelion! And yet there are some unknown sides to this plant. According to the botanists, there would be not one but 200 different species. The Flora of Belgium divides them into sections such as obliqua, erythrosperma and palustria. The large differences in leaf shape and leaf size are partly explained by the ecological characteristics of their growth site: wet or dry, food poor or nutrient-rich... The adaptability of this plant is very great, as with all common 'weeds' herbs. They're real survivors. Curiously, these plants are often used as amplifiers and blood purifiers.
Dandelion, in fact, is the prototype of the cleansing spring plant. First of all, in March and April it is in plenty of fresh stock. Secondly, like the nettle, it contains many minerals and especially a very high potassium content, which is probably responsible for its good urination. Just think of his names pissenlit and pisseflower. Third, he possesses a well-studied biliary and digestion-enhancing effect. In one of the studies, the diuretic activity was as strong as that of chemical diuretics. Furthermore, a weight loss of up to 30% was observed. This research was done by E.Racz-Kotilla and published in the scientific journal Planta Medica, already in 1974. However, as early as 1875, the English researchers Rutherford and Vignal found a ball-driving and toning effect in dogs. The French father of modern phytotherapy Henri Leclerc cured patients with liver problems, gallstones and inflammation of the bile capillaries with this Taraxacum.
Old investigations indeed, but valuable. Is herbal medicine not right, bringing old and new together in order to achieve a multifaceted form of medicine? And is it possible to bring the task of a herbalist - old and new, emotional and rational, folk and responsible - the power of simple plants to the people.
