Pegasus walking festival

Airborne Ede concludes today with a freedom theme walk. There are three distances to choose from, 4km, 8km or 18 km. I choose the 18 km. It's not just a walk, it's one with a story. The story of war and to dwell on it, under walking, the story of freedom. A little history first.

Market Garden

Market = luchtlandingsoperatie en Garden = grondoperatie. British, American, and not to mention Polish troops should drive a big wedge in at least, the German defensive lines. It was thought that there were only second-class German soldiers here. The Ginkelsehei was one of the landing zones of the paras. Sunday 17 September 1944 around 1PM PM. Prior to that landing, bombers carried out two bombing of barracks and raillines in Ede. At least that was intended, but that went wrong, the centre of Ede and especially the South area was hit hard. 69 civilian casualties. The barracks and railways were barely affected. Of the two thousand paras that came down, about two hundred were killed immediately. We commemorate this action every year.
