People watch on Halloween.
Halloween came to Europe via Irish immigrants who brought the tradition to the United States in the 19th century. In America, Halloween grew into a major event with costume parties, pumpkin lanterns, and “trick-or-treating” From the 80s and 90s, Halloween also began to return to Europe, mainly through American movies, TV series and marketing. It is now celebrated in many European countries, especially among young people, with parties, costumes and decorations, but it has less traditional roots than in the Anglo-Saxon countries.
But I'm in a Spanish hotel.
There is some decoration about Halloween, although it is minimal.
A spider web here and there and a pumpkin with some candlelight.
There is nothing more. I don't think it's necessary either.
Just some decoration.
But in the restaurant, I see adult people coming to dinner dressed up and painted.
A tiara with spiders in the hair of a fortysomething.
A man wearing a full pirate suit and uttering a cry when he passes you.
They are in the minority. They can even be counted on two hands.
Kids who come to dinner dressed up, I get that. They grew up with it.
But people in their forties ?
So they packed their suitcases and added special halloween clothes.
A diadem with spiders.
A rug with pumpkins on.
That really raises my eyebrows a little bit.
