You probably heard about the incredible power of a new or full moon in astrology. Moon phases greatly affect our behavior and emotions, as well as natural elements such as ocean tides. While you may think that all new and full moons are equal, in reality they are often different depending on their distance from the Earth. When the moon is closer to the Earth, this results in what is called a supermoon.
What is a supermoon?
When you think about the relationship between the Earth, Moon and the Sun, you notice that this is one of great movement and activity. The moon revolves around the Earth, the Earth revolves around the Sun and we're all on a great galactic journey through space. Since the orbit of the Moon around the Earth is elliptical, there are times when it passes closer to our planet than other. This is known as perigee. At such a moment, the moon seems to be up to 30% larger than when the moon is in its furthest point (apogee). But this is only part of the supermoon phenomenon. The other part concerns syzygy, which in astrology refers to the moment when three celestial bodies are aligned. Most often this applies to the sun, the earth and the moon or any other planet. When sun, earth and moon are aligned and thus syzygy; this results in the new or full Moon. This combination with the perigee is called a supermoon.
The term supermoon was originally coined by astrologer Richard Nolle back in 1979 for an article in Horospcope magazine. Thanks to him, we can now use a much easier term for what astronomers know as perigeum-syzygy. While you might think this is a rare phenomenon, it does happen three to six times a year, just like eclipses. Obviously, a supermoon is visible to us only when it coincides with a full moon. However, this happens only once a year. Approximately every 14th full moon is a supermoon.
