In my opinion empathy is important for altruism, since wanting to help others in that way derives from it. Wanting to help others for one's own benefit is something else.
And yes, it can exist with hedonism. At least that's what I personally believe. Anyway, thanks for the info :)
I also think that the very altruistic people need a bit of appreciation to keep giving. In that sense, completely selfless may not even exist. Although you are still in front of others and do little for yourself and do not expect anything in return from the other person, the appreciation you feel, and the good feeling you get to take care of others gives all that bit of hedonistism .
