Stijn Streuvels, born Frank Lateur in 1871 in Heule, is one of the most influential Flemish writers of the twentieth century. His work is characterized by a realistic and sometimes epic style, describing the harsh but also picturesque life in the countryside.
Ingooigem: Home base and source of inspiration
In 1905, Streuvels settled in Ingooigem, West Flanders, where he had his iconic home, the Thijsternest, built. This house, which overlooks the rolling fields, became not only his home but also his main place of work. Here he wrote classics like De Vlaschaard and Life and death in the closet .
