The baby boom generation, born globally between 1945 and 1955. After 1947, birth rates remained high. For this reason, people who between 1947 and 1955 are referred to as “baby boomers” or as the “baby boom generation”. In this period, according to CBS, about 24 million children were born in the Netherlands. The baby boomer has seen the Netherlands change radically. They grew up in the austere 1950s, experienced prosperity growth and youth cultures from the 1960s and 1970s and witnessed the Vietnam War via television.

The consequences of this extensive birth wave were great. We mention some examples. In the 1950s, the primary schools packed. In the decade following, the same was true for high schools and university, which provided an impetus for the emergence of a critical youth generation that profiled through Provo and then the hippie movement . The urbanization and (sub) urbanization got a big boost due to the baby boom. Furthermore, construction, especially in the 1950s to 1970, had to work hard to build sufficient housing for the growing population.

Flowerpower was an artistic youth culture from the United States in the late 60s and early 70s. It emerged among students in California, especially in San Francisco, particularly in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. The movement got steam when The Beatles identified with it and their album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band came out.

The Woodstock Music Festival in 1969 was a highlight of the flowerpower movement in the United States, which was followed by festivals on the Isle of Wight in Europe ( Isle of Wight festival 1970 ) in the United Kingdom and the Holland Pop Festival in Kralingse Bos in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Psychedelic music, an anti-establishment attitude and protest against the Vietnam War were widely discussed.
