One of the best shows I've watched so far, and I can tell you, there's a lot of them.
This series was first on Netflix and now on Videoland.
There are now 3 seasons available and believe me, this is really a series you can't stop with, if you watch.

This is the storyline:

The series takes place in a dystopian near future. The birth rate has fallen drastically due to sexually transmitted diseases and environmental pollution. After a civil war, a totalitarian regime of Christian fundamentalists called Gilead seizes power in the United States. The country is transformed into a strictly religious society in which the word of God is used as a guide for every aspect of life.

The country is run by a male elite. The few fertile women are forced to become “Handmaids”. These Handmaids, invariably wearing a red robe, are each assigned to a male commander and his submissive wife.
Their main task is to give birth to children, based on the biblical story of Rachel and her handmaid Bilha. For that reason, they are regularly ritually raped by their master. At birth, the child is immediately given to the master and his wife.

To ensure that the Handmaids are not rebellious and accomplish their task as best as possible and live according to the word of God, they are strictly trained and controlled by the “Aunts”, aunts. Behaviour considered deviant, rebellious or sacrilege, such as homosexuality, is violently punished. To ensure that no one flees, the streets are occupied by paramilitary units. There is also a secret police, the so-called “Eyes”, who try to detect and eliminate any kind of rebellion in society.

June Osborne tries to escape totalitarian society with her husband Luke and their child, but she is arrested. She is forced to become a Handmaid and is subsequently placed with the family of the mighty Commander Fred Waterford and his wife Serena Joy. Therefore, she gets the new name Offred. She often thinks back to the years before Gilead, when she still had her own name and identity, was married and had a child. She tries to adhere to the strict rules as best as possible in the hope that one day she will be able to live as a free person and see her daughter again.
