The old man and his second cousin. (Story 1)
Writing challenge January 2018 of Hans of Gemert , submission by © The Original Enrique .
“Come in,” said the old man to his nephew, who stood soaking wet at the front door in the evening. “At least you're still thinking of an old man who sits alone in his old farm.” Uncle chuckled a little. The boy liked to do that, he liked to come to his “uncle” to talk, no, listen more to what the man had experienced in his life. I found yesterday's paper on the doormat. “Take those inside too, young.” Uncle Peter never called his second cousin by his name; he just started talking. “Hang your coat by the stove, and it's so dry. Grab a bowl out of the closet. There's still coffee in the jug, I think.”

Meanwhile, uncle routinely grabbed a cigar out of the box with one hand and with the other the scissors, to cut off a piece very skillfully. The whole tablecloth was filled with pieces of cigar, between the fire holes. He lit it with a match. Always with a match, as it should. Uncle pulled the cigar a few times and the flame was almost sucked off the wooden stick. As usual, there was a fit of coughing that lasted a minute, at least emotionally. On TV there was a news programme. “Turn that thing around, it's been on all day, and there's nothing special on it.” His nephew followed uncle's orders respectfully and sat down. “Have you eaten young because there's still a little yogurt different. That's what the neighbor came with but I don't like it, like you're eating toothpaste”. Uncle laughed at his own jokes again. He used to do that. “Actually, someone had to go to the store for me because there's almost nothing left in the house. Yes, not for me, I do not need so much but you never know who will come”.
In the meantime, the second cousin had a lukewarm cup of coffee in front of him and surrounded by cigar smoke, Uncle Janus and Aunt Truus came to our house every weekend...” Uncle laughed and he got his preachers again, the atmosphere was as usual and the boy listened handcuffed as if he heard the stories for the first time...
