The tallest tree in the Netherlands
In the Paleispark of Paleis het Loo in Apeldoorn stands the tallest tree in the Netherlands: a douglas fir of over 50 meters high.
The tree is located northwest of the royal stables.
A few years ago I visited the park (where there are also some beautiful hiking routes) and found the part where the oldest planting of douglas spruce in the Netherlands were.
Estimates of the height of the douglas spruce near Het Loo came to 52 metres in the late 1980s.
On 10 November 2011 Leo Goudzwaard and Mart Vlam (Wageningen University & Research centre) measured the height reliably with a laser ranger.
The highest measured specimen turns out to be 50.3 meters, in addition to several specimens ranging from 45 to 49 m, making the Douglas spruce on Het Loo the highest trees in our country with great certainty.
By the way, these trees were imported from America between 1860 and 1870 by order of King William III.
