Honey, look how many butterflies are on our butterfly bush?” , Mieke tells her husband, “What's their name again?”
“Thistle Butterfly. It is indeed curious that they are with so many this year. Last year you could count them on your hands. I wonder how that comes. Would it have something to do with climate change? Last year it was extremely hot. Remember? We had one heat wave after another. People were already in the South at the time and some even had a swimming pool installed. Because the Corona didn't allow them to travel”
“Yes, the weather was very easy for me. But the Corona was a big stripe for people through the bill”
Actually, I would like to investigate this.”
“Gosh! Are you going to explore why people felt mentally compelled to set up a pool?”
“Gaped! Hi hi hi. I mean, of course, the butterflies”
“Oh yes.”
“You know, it's real world travelers. They fly, high in the sky, just about the hemisphere. They pass West and North Africa, cross the Sahara and the Ocean to eventually arrive in Europe. Sometimes, like this year, they are abundant in Belgium. But last year you could count them on your hands. That has a cause. My colleagues and I are brainstorming on an interesting subject to scrutiny. The thistle butterfly seems like a fine subject to me. Instant video chat with them. Let us hope my proposal will like them”

Bert's colleagues could be found right away. Because the butterfly can be seen all over the world, they all made contact with their well-trained insect researchers abroad. They went to look up and study the butterflies everywhere.
They themselves are guarding the butterflies in Belgium and the Netherlands.
They also collect climate and atmosphere data in Sub-Africa and Europe.
After a long investigation, they eventually discover the reason for their changing presence in Europe.
The caterpillars of the black-spotted orange thistle butterflies, like all caterpillars, are true glutton. Of course, they feed on plants. But they do not grow in summer but winter conditions in Africa. So at times when it rains a lot. This can cause the population of these butterflies to explode. They then fly across the Sahara to North Africa in large numbers from West Africa.
That's what they have a desert to cross.
They usually stop at the sandy bottom of the Sahara.
But never for long. Because their instincts tell them that a lot of starving mouths are lurking to cheer them up. Like the lizard, scorpion, beetles and a few other tough insects.
In North Africa, the caterpillars once again enjoy all the wet juicy leaves they can find there.
Which causes the butterflies to pry themselves out of their cocons again. Before they cross the Mediterranean in even larger quantities.
After which they finally reach Europe.
Yet the thistle butterflies, high in the atmosphere, are also helped by a pleasant. It blows between Africa and Western Europe.

“We discovered it, Mieke,” Bert says one evening, “The Thistle butterflies manage to reach the European mainland in mass when there is more vegetation during the West African winter and North African spring. This may be combined with an excellent backwind between Africa and Western Europe. Isn't that remarkable?
Such a butterfly covers 12,000 to 14,000 kilometers. They do the longest migration route ever detected in an insect. T is just formidable”
“You can say this. I'm totally perplexed by it too. All right, in our garden, we have such a bow of a butterfly bush.
Next year I'm going to provide extra flowers with nectar. That's what those butterflies have deserved.”
