Travel in your own country: Damme
Damme is a small town located northeast of Bruges, in the Belgian West Flanders.
Once it was a port town, when the North Sea still had its foothills to the heart of the province.
When the Zwin got bogged down, Damme fell down as a port.
The Damse Vaart now runs in a straight line to the city of Bruges. De Vaart was dug on behalf of Napoleon, who was looking for a connection between the French ports and the city of Antwerp.
Today it is delightful walking between the poplars along the canal and past the former star-shaped fortresses of the old town.
