What Is Codeine?
Codeine is an opiate used to treat pain, as a cough suppressant, and for diarrhoea. It is typically taken by mouth, and effects typically begin within 20 to 30 minutes. Maximum effect is usually felt within two hours. Common side effects include vomiting, constipation, itchiness, lightheadedness, and drowsiness. Serious side effects may include slowed breathing, circulatory depression, and coma. Death from overdose is estimated to occur in 0.2 to 1.5% of people. Tolerance and dependence occurs with long-term use, leading to drug-seeking behaviour and potentially to addiction.
