“Bob, I find that light on the ceiling way too intense. Can't we turn a weaker light into that”
“Definitely not. You know I need a lot of light to see the fine print of the newspaper”
“Can I put a dimmer in between”
“Okay. But you'll have to do it yourself this week. Because I have a very busy week ahead of me. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until next week”
“I try it myself once. It can't be that difficult”
“Good. I can't wait to see how you do it”

In the Brico, you did have a choice of dimmers. There were 220V of them, whether or not for a halogen lamp. Our lamp isn't. There are standard versions and electronic dimmers.
Please ask if I can also install an electronic one.

“Mr., Is it complicated to install an electronic dimmer”
“Unfortunately for an ordinary layman. I wouldn't venture into that. If I were yours, I would choose a standard version. You can also only replace the switch with a dimmer if only the lamp in question is operated with it”
“Yes, that is the case. So a standard version.
Just this one”
“Great decision. With a toggle switch, the installation is much more complicated. Then more knowledge is required”
“Thanks for the info”

We really need to do this wisely now. Electricity can be dangerous.
Just turn on the lamp. Then I can see if I have the correct link in the meter box turned them off.

That has already succeeded.
I have an old switch. Then you don't have to unscrew anything. The switch is then only clamped between the cover plate.
So I just have to put a small screwdriver under the cover plate.
You see? I'm right. I read it in the “Do It Yourself Book”
With new switches, the switch button falls over the cover plate, which then has to be removed first, I read. Then you first carefully loosen the switch button with a small screwdriver.
With a lot of switch, there is a hint at the bottom in which your tool can then plug in.
But I don't have to do that.

Behold, that went smoothly.

The pressure plate provides a plastic or metal holder inside.
You just leave that one behind. You just work the cover plate off the wall, the holder comes along.

“Easy! Behold.

To the left and right of the interior are slightly recessed two mounting screws with slotted head.
Turn it out a little bit with the appropriate screwdriver until the switch comes off.
My walls do have a drywall. That's why I also have to unscrew a small screw at the top and bottom in the middle.

“Yoopee! I got the thing out of the wall! That's where we are. I do find it exciting. But of course that's because I'm doing this for the first time. If I were to do that every day, it would just be a daily grind.

The thing is still attached to 2 wires. Logically, the electrics have to go through something.
One is the phase wire that supplies the voltage. The other one goes to the lamp. look, there are arrows in front of the switches. One inside. The other one out.

They are also on my brand new dimmer. The one wire next to the arrow in, must therefore be in the dimmer next to the similar arrow.
So the other thread next to the other arrow. These wires must be in the dimmer between a clamp.
I don't even have to screw easily anymore.
The wires must be so deep that no uninsulated wire is visible anymore.
To get them in, I have to press the red pallet. Well you need some strength to do that.
Let's see if they're strong enough.

Oh yeah! It succeeded. I pulled it well and there was no movement to see.

Now the dimmer in the wall box.
Of course, this dimmer also has a cover plate. It needs to be taken off.
On the dimmer itself, you can see two mounting screws. I unscrew it quite a bit. But not entirely.
Then I plug the dimmer into the wall box.
Just see if she's right in it.
Now tighten the screws in turn and because I have drywall also a screw at the top and bottom. All right, the holes of the previous link door correspond to it. Otherwise I would have had to pull out my front.

Behold, it's stuck. Now the frame around it and of course the cover plate. Then the icing on the cake: the dial for the dimming setting. Press firmly into place. Ready, is Kees.

Now just check if it works.

Yes you know! Nice such a muted light. I like this so much and my husband can still read the newspaper with the light in full force.
Everybody happy.

We replace the light switch with a dimmer.
