Weed killer Roundup also kills bumblebees
The lethal effect of Roundup for bumblebees may not come from the active substance glyphosate, but from additives. The commonly used weed killer Roundup also kills bumblebees. The lethal effect does not come from the active (and controversial) component, glyphosate, but from another substance in the pesticide. That is what researchers conclude on the basis of tests with different formulations of glyphosate. The study is published this Tuesday in Journal of Applied Ecology. Glyphosate has been on the market since the 1970s and has been under attack for years, especially as it could be carcinogenic for humans. The World Health Organization rated it as “probably carcinogenic in humans” in 2015.
