What is shingles?

#whatis Shingles or herpes zoster is rashes or blisters on the skin. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you have had chickenpox, the virus remains in your body. It may not cause problems for years, but as you get older, the virus can come back as shingles.

Shingles is not contagious, but a person with shingles can spread chickenpox. If you have never had chickenpox or had the chickenpox vaccine, try to stay away from someone who has shingles.

If you have shingles, try to avoid getting close to people who did not have chickenpox or who did not have the chickenpox vaccine, or someone with a weak immune system.
