Yoors Flower Parade, day 90.

Today in the flower parade: a bulb with an ugly name, but beautiful flowers.
I'm talking about the Kaffer Lily, or in Latin, Schizostylis coccinea.
A far too difficult name, I keep it on the Dutch Kafferlelie.

Although this plant seems to have been in my father's garden for years, I had not spotted her before.
This is the result of always being surrounded by many kinds of flowers.
The Kaffer lily I photographed, however, stands out because of its beautiful red flowers.

The kaffer lily is a sphere, originating in South Africa.
You plant the bulbs in your garden, and otherwise you just leave them alone.
And then, in October, flowers appear, beautiful red flowers.
The plant will be about 70cm high.

Plant some more bulbs, then you get a nice big pol!
When the bulbs are happy, they can form a cloud of flowers, my father says.
After a few years, that cloud can become a little less, then you pawn the bulbs, and leave them alone again.

The Kaffer lily blooms in October, November and disappears in winter.
In severe frosts, you need to put something on the bottom to prevent the bulbs from freezing, so remember where they stand!
Furthermore, the bulbs do not make much demands, an easy, grateful bloomer!
