The days in pandemic lockdown go by, they seem empty but we quickly arrive to evening with that feeling of aging without having lived and with aching joints from forced inactivity. By now we are used to it. We spent four months like this last winter. We are now stronger, more prepared. The daily news about the dead, however, assail us like buckets of frozen water, but living with the virus has also become this, the sad habit to death, even to that of those we know. Does it make sense to think of Christmas in these conditions?

It certainly has it for those who are religious. The birth of Jesus, rather than giving hope, puts us in front of the inexorable cycle of life and death. But it also has it for those who do not believe. First of all the children and not just them. We need so much lightness, hope, to feel that life goes on always and in any case. A year of pandemic has affected us all, physically, economically but also psychologically.

I don't believe in God, no longer from the age of reason. I don't believe in God as I don't believe in Santa Claus. Yet I like the sound of the bells, the smell of incense, the moss and the sheep of the nativity scene. And I love that Santa arrives on a sleigh on the most magical night.

When I was little, the tree was always made with the same decorations from one year to the next. They were blown glass balls, delicate and precious, if one broke, you would despair. But now I like to change the colors of the decorations and match them to the decorations in the room, the Christmas tablecloth, even my clothes. It is consumerist nonsense, perhaps, but also creative.

The leitmotiv this year will be red, green and rustic wood color. A little difficult to find, this last shade. So I ordered online. Yes, due to the pandemic I was unable to do the usual shopping experience that relaxed and amused me, nor will I probably go through the markets for frivolous last-minute purchases. Like it or not, Santa Claus will arrive disguised as an Amazon courier this year.
