French-Flanders, where the name signs sound very Flemish, lies just over the Belgian south-west border. On the border between Artesia and French-Flanders lies the city of Saint-Omer. We are staying in the Chateau Tilques , in the village of the same name 5 km from Saint-Omer. It is a 19th century castle with typical French charm, surrounded by a castle garden and with an indoor swimming pool in the annex.

The city of Saint-Omer was founded in the 7th century around an abbey on a hill in the marshes, of which only the ruins can be visited.

Our walk itself (about 3 km if you only walk past the monuments and go nowhere), starts at the Place Foch. There is a parking lot here. However, we park at the Maison du Marais , just outside the city. Opposite this free parking you walk straight to the city.

GPS track for this hike is Here free download.

We walk past the city park, but we don't go in. The gardens are always open. They are so vast that it is a walk in itself. A ticket is available in the tourist office. You can also visit the gardens independently via the free app 'Walls and Gardens'.
