Maybe those of you that have moved to a different country might have experienced the same.
I was born in Portugal. When I was 9 we moved to South Africa. I am now 39, so I have been here a pretty long time.
Often people like to remind me that I don't belong here.
But I went to school here.
I went to college here.
I got married here.
I had kids here.
I speak with a South African accent.
I bought a house here.
I pay taxes here.
Yet, many like to remind me, that I am not really one of them. You are an European. You are Portuguese.
Ironically, in Portugal, they tell me that I am a South African.
I say, but I was born here. "But you have been there longer" "You are one of them now."
Have any of you ever had this?

As far as I can take a wild guess,... Show moreFirst of all, I don't like people have that opinion of you. You've spend a lot more years living there, than in Portugal. Also you were a young girl back then (now a young woman) so I assume you didn't decide this yourself.
As far as I can take a wild guess, you fit in very well. You're a very nice, funny, loving, human being. Maybe THEY don't belong there.
As answer to your question: in villages it's often the case that locals don't easily 'accept' 'new' people there. I moved from my city of birth to a village nearby. I've never heard I don't fit in, but some did make me feel that way. Could be misinterpret from me.
