Diamond scalpel was created by the Venezuelan scientist and physician Humberto Fernández-Morán. The name is due to its blade made of diamonds that is used in microsurgeries such as those performed in ophthalmology.
It is also used to make ultra-fine cuts in materials from biological tissues to lunar samples brought to Earth by astronauts.
Some goldsmiths use it to cut precise sections of soft materials, such as silver.
The diamond blade earned Fernández Morán the John Scott Award (1967), making him the only Latin American with that award.
He was also proposed for the Nobel Prize, a request that he rejected, as he would have to renounce his Venezuelan nationality and adopt US citizenship.
A curious fact: is that his diamond blade cutter was used to extract soil samples from the moon and collect fragments of its rocks for analysis of their elemental composition.
