I remember the thrill when my Grandfather sent for me and showed me his binoculars.

The year before, I had received child’s binoculars as a birthday gift. I liked them but I felt that they were a toy more than anything else.

Not like those on my Grandfather’s desk, with big, defiant lenses staring at me!

I was a shy boy by then and a bit of a dreamer, as shy boys of that age can be.
